Quirky

He called her quirky.
But she didn’t know what the word meant.
She feigned understanding, though.
She hoped it was something good.

When he called her quirky again a few months later,
she had to ask.

Quirky?
Baby, you’re not like other folk.
You’re just a little bit different.
If you had money, you’d be eccentric.
It’s what I love about you.

When she was in high school,
she thought her future lover would be attracted to her
for her intellect,
or for her sense of humour,
or for her kindness,
or possibly, hopefully even, for her good looks.

But quirkiness?

Well, she was sorry,
but that simply wouldn’t do.
He was okay for now, she supposed,
but she probably would have to break up with him soon.
